Dutch Ale House Features Artwork of Joe Sinnott
By Erin Sinnott
On Sunday, February 20th, the Dutch Ale House of Saugerties hosted an open house featuring the artwork of legendary Marvel comic artist Joe Sinnott. The work ranged from some of his famed art of the comic heroes (Captain America, The Fantastic Four, and Spiderman to name a few) to “Der Bingle”—Bing Crosby’s German album covers. The event drew many anticipated guests, eager to meet and greet Joe as well as browse the gallery. Fans of all ages, longtime friends, and family arrived to the show. Not only was it an exciting day for the Ale House goers, but for Joe. He was surprised with many old friends from the comic industry arriving, as well as his granddaughter coming home from college in Boston to attend the show. In fact, many people travelled from all over to meet with Joe at his gallery.
Joe spent hours talking to the guests and signing prints of his work. He signed many copies of his book, Brush Strokes With Greatness: The Life and Art of Joe Sinnott written by Tim Lasiuta. Joe posed for many photographs with family, friends, and fans and eagerly told stories of his job at Marvel as well as personal stories. Unlike many of the conventions he is invited to and travels to numerous times a year, Joe was pleased to have a local event.
Along with Joe’s art and the opportunity to converse with him came great food. Appetizers were served on the side while people browsed and waitresses happily took orders for those in need of lunch or a drink. Even Joe was pleased with their breaded haddock! Like the famous quote in Spiderman says, “With great art comes great food”… or something like that.
The exhibit features over thirty pieces of Joe’s artwork. This showcase of his career timeline can be viewed through the month of March at the Dutch Ale House at 255 Main Street in Saugerties. So, when you’re looking for something to do, why not stop by to view the artwork and get some lunch? It's a gallery you don’t want to miss!
